The UK Department of Health has confirmed that US drug behemoth Pfizer’s subsidiary, Wyeth, has been awarded the contract to supply Prevenar 13 (Pneumococcal polysaccharide conjugate vaccine [13-valent, adsorbed]) for the country’s childhood immunization program. This decision means that infants in the UK will receive the broadest available protection against pneumococcal disease, a leading cause of vaccine-preventable death in children younger than five years of age.

Two new product licensing agreements were announced yesterday: Anglo-Swedish drug major entered a deal with Dako Denmark A/S to collaborate on companion diagnostic tests for multiple AstraZeneca oncology projects, including biologics and small molecules, in various stages of discovery and development. Also, Alcon, the eye-care giant at the heart a full takeover accord by Swiss drug major Novartis (The Pharma Letter January 4), has acquired rights to two products from Sirion Therapeutics. Financial terms of neither transaction were revealed.

The US Food and Drug Administration yesterday issued a warning to consumers about a counterfeit and potentially harmful version of the branded product Alli (which has as its active ingredient orlistat). The counterfeits in fact contained sibutramine, which should not be used by certain patients or without physician oversight and can interact in a harmful way with other medications, the FDA said.

The German business daily Handelsblatt reports that acquisitive Israeli generics giant Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, global drugs behemoth Pfizer and the Swedish private equity fund EQT are the three finalists for privately-owned German generics drug company Ratiopharm GmbH, which was put up for sale after the suicide of its principal, Adolf Merckle, in January last year.
