Colombia pharmaceuticals market growth to slow to around 7%-8%, says BMI

October 30, 2009 Pharmaceutical sales in Colombia reached 4,466 billion Colombian pesos ($2.27bn) in 2008, according to a new report from Business Monitor International. This represents impressive growth of 11.4% in local currency terms between 2007 and 2008 (compared with a 3.2% decline in the drug market between 2006 and 2007).

Merck and Schering-Plough merger gets more competition authority backing

Merck & Co’s $41.1 billion acquisition of fellow US drug major Schering-Plough moved a significant step closer with clearance from the US Federal Trade Commission, the Swiss Competition Commission and the Canadian Competition Bureau on October 29. All that is now left is approval from the relevant authorities in China and Mexico, the companies note, saying they still expect completion of the transaction by year-end.

German health reforms planned, including drug spending curbs

The German government is planning “yet another” revamp of the health system, says the FT Deutschland, which will see major changes to the country’s health care fund. Premiums are currently fixed at 14.9% of gross income but, in future, health insurers will be allowed to set their own rates again, a step deemed positive for transparency and competition by German drug industry association VFA general manager Cornelia Yzer.

Anglo-Swedish drug major AstraZeneca beat consensus forecasts, posting third-quarter 2009 earnings a share of 41.68, versus projections of $1.38. Net profit rose 22% to $2.12 billion for three months to the end of September, boosted by initial sales of its swine flu vaccine - which reached $152 million - and delayed entry of generic drug competition in the USA. Revenue for the quarter rose 5.5% to $8.2 billion.

Pharma accepts Ecuador’s decision to make cheap versions of patented drugs

Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa this week declared access to priority medicines affecting the health of the Ecuadorean population to be a matter of public interest. Under Andean Community law, the declaration opens the door to competition from generic medicines with patented brand-name drugs, through the use of compulsory licensing. The declaration could lead to government policies that expand access to medicines.

France’s Ipsen sees strong 3rd quarter and nine month 2009 performance

French biopharmaceutical company Ipsen reported a 5.8% rise in sales in the first nine months of 2009, at 777.5 million euros ($1.17 billion), with turnover growth of 7.8% to 256.4 million euros in the third quarter.
