The antidiabetic medicines industry generated $35.6 billion in 2012, and its revenues will show strong growth to 2023. Positive results from sub-analysis of Eliquis ARISTOTLE trial

US drug major Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE: BMY) and partner Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) reported results from a pre-specified sub-analysis of the ARISTOTLE trial (n=18,201) showing that the reduction in stroke or systemic embolism, number of major bleeding events and mortality demonstrated with Eliquis (apixaban) compared to warfarin were consistent across subgroups defined based on levels of International Normalized Ratio control in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.

Alliance Boots to build up interest in China

According to the Financial Times, Stefano Pessina, executive chairman of Alliance Boots, is looking to China for his next big deal, nine months after completing the multibillion pound sale of a stake in the retailer and pharmaceutical wholesaler to the USA's Walgreens, which initially took a 45% stake for $6.7 billion, with an option to buy the remainder (The Pharma Letter June 20, 2012).

BioCity to develop BioHub at Alderley Park post AstraZeneca

BioCity Nottingham, a UK provider of life sciences business incubation services, has been appointed by AstraZeneca (LSE: AZN) to establish a new center for bioscience companies at Alderley Park in Cheshire, which the Anglo-Swedish drug major has revealed it will vacate as part of a restructuring (The Pharma Letter March 19). The BioHub will initially provide 36,000 sq ft of high-end laboratory and office facilities for early-stage and growing firms engaged in innovative drug discovery and development. The aim is to secure a sustainable future for the site.

Surveys reveal opportunity for medical community to fully embrace biomarker testing in lung cancer

Results of two surveys that explored how pulmonologists and pathologists are incorporating biomarker testing into the care of patients with lung cancer have been announced by the US subsidiary of German family-owned drug major Boehringer Ingelheim. The results point to an increased role of these physicians in biomarker testing as well as greater multidisciplinary collaboration. However, they also reveal that an opportunity exists to improve how soon these tests are requested and to identify challenges with testing, including collecting a sufficient amount and quality of lung tissue.

Almirall pays GW Pharma milestone on Sativex; reports 1st-qtr results

UK-based GW Pharmaceuticals (AIM: GWP) says that it has received commercialization approval for its cannabinoid-based prescription medicine Sativex from the authorities in Italy for the treatment of moderate to severe spasticity in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients who have not responded adequately to other anti-spasticity medications.

New York parents charge Pfizer for concealing true risks of birth defects linked to Zoloft

A law suit against pharmaceutical giant Pfizer (NYSE: PFE), for the permanent and devastating injuries their minor son suffered from birth defects allegedly caused by the firm's prescription antidepressant Zoloft (sertraline), that was prescribed to the mother during her pregnancy, has been launched by the boy's parents, Kori and Jami Wolcott, residents of Rochester, New York, according to law firm Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein.

Six months post launch, US prescribing trends for Xtandi

At six months following launch of Xtandi (Astellas Pharma/Medivation's enzalutamide), surveyed urologists and medical oncologists in the USA prescribed Xtandi to a respective 19% and 24% of their metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) patients who have failed to respond or had very rapid progression from docetaxel (Sanofi's Taxotere, generics) treatment.
