Clinical success rates for new cancer drugs doubled between the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, while the number of new cancer drugs entering clinical testing increased 50 percent during the same time, according to an analysis recently completed by the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development.

BioCity Nottingham, a UK provider of life sciences business incubation services, has been appointed by AstraZeneca (LSE: AZN) to establish a new center for bioscience companies at Alderley Park in Cheshire, which the Anglo-Swedish drug major has revealed it will vacate as part of a restructuring (The Pharma Letter March 19). The BioHub will initially provide 36,000 sq ft of high-end laboratory and office facilities for early-stage and growing firms engaged in innovative drug discovery and development. The aim is to secure a sustainable future for the site.

Privately-held biotech firm Concert Pharmaceuticals said yesterday (May 6) that it has entered into a strategic collaboration with fellow USA-based biotech Celgene (Nasdaq: CELG) directed towards deuterium-modified compounds targeting cancer and inflammation. The collaboration will initially focus on one program, but has the potential to encompass multiple targets.

US pharma major Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE: BMY) says that the US Food and Drug Administration has approved a supplemental New Drug Application (sNDA) for Sustiva (efavirenz), including dosing recommendations for HIV-1 infected pediatric patients three months to three years old and weighing at least 3.5kg.

US biotech firm Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: REGN) has expanded its ophthalmology portfolio by acquiring full exclusive rights to two families of novel antibodies invented at Regeneron and previously included in the company's antibody collaboration with French drug major Sanofi (Euronext: SAN).

Privately-held US biotech firm Acceleron Pharma says that Ireland-headquartered Shire (LSE: SHP) has concluded its collaboration on ACE-031 and related molecules. The clinical development of ACE-031 was suspended in February 2011 and since then the companies have conducted preclinical studies to determine whether to resume clinical studies.

US biotech firm AVEO Oncology (Nasdaq: AVEO) saw its shares plunge as much as 57% in late trading yesterday (May 2), after the stock was suspended ahead of a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel which, at the end of the day, gave a negative opinion for the company's cancer drug tivozanib. The stock closed down 49.6% at $2.65.
