Generic medicines pricing reforms deliver significant savings to Australian government, says CSES report

Australia's 2010 Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) reforms have delivered the government significant savings. A report by Centre for Strategic Economic Studies, released this week, estimates that savings to government and general patients (non-health-card holding patients) will be up to A$18 billion ($17.53 billion) over eight years.

Novo A/S acquires Norway's Xellia Pharmaceuticals in $700 million deal

Denmark-based Novo A/S, the holding company of the Novo Group and the major shareholder in Novo Nordisk and Novozymes, has purchased all shares of the Norwegian firm Xellia Pharmaceutical for around $700 million from 3i and other current shareholders. As a consequence of the transaction, Xellia will revert to Danish ownership with headquarters in Copenhagen.

Actavis confirms plan to acquire Warner Chilcott, in $8.5 billion deal

US generics major Actavis (NYSE: ACT) revealed today (May 20) that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Ireland-based specialty drugmaker Warner Chilcott (Nasdaq: WCRX) in a stock-for-stock transaction valued at around $8.5 billion (including $3 billion of debt). Actavis' shares gained 2.6% to $128.70 in premarket trading, while those of Warner Chilcott rose 3.3% to $19.85.

US drugmaker Impax Laboratories (Nasdaq: IPXL) says that its generics division, Global Pharmaceuticals, commenced shipment of an authorized generic version of Zomig (zolmitriptan) tablets and orally disintegrating tablets, 2.5mg and 5mg, in the USA, as part of a distribution, license, development and supply agreement with Anglo-Swedish drug major AstraZeneca (LSE: AZN).

Dr Reddy's Laboratories (NYSE: RDY), India's second largest drugmaker, has announced its audited consolidated financial results for the fourth quarter and full year ended March 31, 2013, showing that consolidated revenues for the year were 116.3 billion rupees ($2.13 billion), recording year-on-year growth of 20%. Excluding the beneficial impact of olanzapine (Eli Lilly's antipsychotic drug Zyprexa) exclusivity in fiscal 2012, sales registered year-on-year growth of 26%.

As negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) restart in Lima, Peru, tomorrow (May 15), countries must prioritize fixing critical flaws in the agreement that could leave millions of people in developing countries with limited access to affordable generic medicines, international medical humanitarian organization Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said today.
