A$73M for Rx drug packaging in Australia

2 September 2007

The Australian government has announced a package worth A$72.9 million ($59.7 million) for packaging improvements by pharmacies to help patients manage their drugs better. The program provides support to community pharmacists to help patient compliance by packaging the drugs according to the daily dose schedule.

The funds have been provided by the Commonwealth Government to the Pharmacy Guild of Australia under the Fourth Pharmacy Agreement for the Dose Administration Aids program, which expires in June 2010. Pharmacies will be provided with details of the scheme during September and October.

The repackaged drugs would be either in unit-dose (one drug per compartment) or multi-dose (different drugs in a compartment) packs.
