Recent research has highlighted that people who take a daily dose of cod liver oil could reduce the risk by 30% of suffering from the symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression compared to those who do not.
This latest research into the benefits of cod liver oil, essential in the production of calcium and the maintenance of healthy bones, skin and hair, was published in the Journal of Affective Disorders and analysed data from a study involving 21,835 people (aged between 40-49 and 70-74 years). The study supports existing evidence that cod liver oil can help reduce the symptoms of depression when taken in a daily dose.
The study is particularly relevant in light of previous research conducted amongst people in the Arctic, where - despite being a disorder associated with higher latitudes - the incidence of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is extremely rare. The deciding factor has been shown to be their diet, which is extremely rich in omega-3 fatty acids, found in coldwater fish. Conversely, when fish consumption goes down, the incidence of SAD begins to increase .
