Uganda's President, Yoweri Museveni, commissioned a high-technology factory for the production of full triple therapy combination antiretroviral drugs on October 8, claiming this to be the first of its kind in Africa.
The plant is a joint venture between local firm Quality Chemical Industries and India's Cipla, and will produce Triomune, a combination of lamivudine, stavudine and nevarapine. Initially, it will make two million pills a day, increasing to six million, of 1.8 billion a year. Any production surplus to Uganda's requirements will be exported to neighboring countries, reports New Vision.
