AstraZeneca to appeal $215M Ala damages
Alleging Medicaid drug price fraud, a court in the USA state of Alabama has ordered Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical major AstraZeneca to pay $215.0 million in compensatory and punitive damages. The state claimed that the company had made its citizens pay too much for prescription medicines by inflating prices their over a period of 15 years
Responding to the order, AstraZeneca said that it intends to seek reconsideration or reversal of a verdict in the Montgomery County Circuit Court awarding $40.0 million in compensatory damages and $175.0 million in punitive damages for alleged false and misleading reporting of prices for drugs reimbursed by the Alabama State Medicaid Agency.
The company was among 73 pharmaceutical manufacturers named in a law suit filed in 2005 by the Alabama Attorney General, alleging that misleading and false reported prices had caused Alabama Medicaid to reimburse pharmacists too much money on prescriptions filed for Medicaid patients.
