AYERST RESHUFFLES IN CANADIAN MERGER

18 April 1993

Ayerst Laboratories is creating 90 jobs and losing 17 others in St Laurent in Canada in a reshuffle of its drug manufacturing and marketing operations. Production is to be increased gradually as part of its merger with Wyeth, based in Windsor, Ontario, to form Wyeth-Ayerst Canada. The two companies are subsidiaries of American Home Products of the USA.

The Wyeth plant in Windsor will close in July, according to local reports which say the St Laurent plant is much larger. There will also be a relocation of 17 marketing and sales positions from Montreal to Toronto where the merged marketing operations will be based.

Ayerst Labs is reported to spend C$20 million ($15.8 million) on R&D annually, representing around 11% of prescription drug sales in Canada.
