German drug major Boehringer Ingelheim has received a UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommendation for Pradaxa (dabigatran etexilate), to receive an additional indication as an option for the primary prevention of venous thromboembolic events in adults who have undergone elective total hip or knee replacement surgery.
Final NICE guidance for National Health Service clinical practise is expected to be issued shortly, says the firm. Pradaxa was approved for marketing in all EU member countries by the European Medications Agency (EMEA) in March 2008, and has already received positive recommendations from local Health Technology bodies in Scotland (Scottish Medicines Consortium) and Denmark (IRF). The drug has been available in Germany and the UK since April, and has marketing approval in Canada.
