BIO applauds introduction of bipartisan ORPHAN Cures Act

10 February 2025

The ORPHAN Cures Act (HR 946), a bipartisan bill that removes barriers to treating and curing rare diseases, was reintroduced in the US House of Representative last week.

The ORPHAN Cures Act is bipartisan legislation that would amend the Inflation Reduction Act’s (IRA) orphan drug exclusion and incentivize critical follow-on investment into rare disease drug development.

Commenting on the development, John Crowley, president and chief executive of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO), said: “For more than 40 years, the Orphan Drug Act has provided hope to 30 million Americans living with a rare disease. This bipartisan law has helped spur hundreds of new treatments and transformed the standard of care for these patients and their families.”
