The Biotechnology Industry Organization has awarded Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano (Democrat) with its Governor of the Year award in recognition of "her passionate support of the biosciences," the group said.
Jim Greenwood, president of the BIO, said: "Governor Napolitano has been instrumental in building collaboration within Arizona to grow the bioscience industry. With her support, investment in bioscience research and development has increased significantly, leading to an increase in the number [of] bioscience jobs being created in the state." He added that, "due to her leadership, Arizona has become one of the fastest growing states in bioscience industry development."
Mr Greenwood also drew attention to Gov Napolitano's record as the Chairman of the all-party National Governors' Association, where she promoted mathematics and science education, encouraging students via her 'Innovation America' initiative.
