First disease modifying treatment for type 1 diabetes backed by UK’s NICE
The UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has issued final draft guidance recommending a new drug – teplizumab from French pharma major Sanofi (Euronext: SAN) - that delays the onset of Stage 3 type 1 diabetes (T1D) in adults and pediatric patients aged 8 years and older with Stage 2 T1D.
In the UK, there are approx. 400,000 people living with T1D, of which about 32,000 are under the age of 19 years old. A survey of 200 people with T1D revealed that nearly 4 in 10 (38%) people living with T1D have required an A&E visit in the past year.[vi]
