BioNTech collaborates with pharma giant on mRNA-based flu vaccines

German immunotherapeutics specialist BioNTech has signed up on a new development partnership that could lead to the company earning as much as $425 million in upfront and contingent payments.

BioNTech has entered into a multi-year R&D collaboration with US pharma giant Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) to develop mRNA-based vaccines for the prevention of influenza.

Under the terms of the agreement, BioNTech and Pfizer will jointly conduct research and development activities to help advance mRNA-based flu vaccines. Pfizer will assume sole responsibility for further clinical development and commercialization of mRNA-based flu vaccines, following BioNTech’s completion of a first in human clinical study.
