China whistleblower barred from US trip

Jiang Yangyong, a Chinese surgeon who exposed his government's cover up of the severe acute respiratory syndrome outbreak in 2003, has been prevented from leaving China to collect an award in the USA, the New York Times reports. He sent a letter to foreign media outlets disclosing there were over 100 SARS patients in China. Dr Jiang used his prestige to raise difficult issues for the ruling Communist Party, such as the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.
