The Netherlands pharmacy federation, the KNMP, has attacked the newly-privatized health fund regime, claiming the system is leading insurers to meddle in drug prescribing. It said the health insurance companies were "installing" themselves in the pharmacies and medical practices and intervening in matters of prescription detail affecting drug products to which patients had a right.
To keep costs down in a competitive market, some of the health funds are only reimbursing one type of drug product - namely the cheapest available. The KNMP says this works to the disadvantage of patients used to a particular drug for long-term treatment. The Dutch system has now been privatized for 12 months as part of what is claimed to be an unsuccessful reform.
