EAC plans for joint food/drug agency

The East African Community (the regional intergovernmental organization of the Republics of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi with its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania) is in the advanced stage of formulating a joint food and drug authority, as agreed by the countries' council of ministers.

Eriya Kategaya, the Minister of East African Affairs, said this was aimed at strengthening the existing pharmaceutical regulatory agencies in the region. He added that the ministers had also recommended the reviewing of the capacity of the drug regulatory agencies in terms of medicine, policy, legal procurement distribution and management, reports AllAfrica.com.
