"Essential drug" scheme for China by 2011
China will implement an essential medicine system nationwide by 2011 in order to reduce prescription costs and curb unrest caused by access difficulties. The program was announced by Liu Xinming, Director General of the Ministry of Health's policy and regulations department, via the government-controlled Xinhua news agency, and is part of a wider action plan of health care reform (Marketletter April 13).
