Europe's best and worst countries in terms of diabetes and cardiac care

1 December 2008

The quality of care and treatment provided to diabetic patients, as well as people with cardiac ailments, in Poland is one of the poorest among European countries. The best diabetes care can be found in Denmark, while Luxembourg is the country with the highest quality of cardiac therapy across the region. Poland, together with almost all central and eastern European countries, has a long way to achieve the health care quality of western European states, according to the local market research firm PMR's Pharma Poland News.

Denmark, with a total score of 837 points out of 1,000, has emerged as the winner of the Euro Consumer Diabetes Index 2008 prepared by Health Consumer Powerhouse. The UK (836 points) follows with respect to good diabetes management. Worthy of note is the fact that both Denmark and the UK spend about the average amount of money on health care overall, but provide better diabetes treatment than countries spending three times more in this area, which shows that financial issues are not essential to providing good therapy. Poland, with 544 points, ranks 25th and, as all eastern European countries, needs to improve its diabetes care. The best results among the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) were achieved by Lithuania and Latvia, which rank 15th and 16th, respectively.
