UK drug major GlaxoSmithKline have been granted approval for its low-platelet disease drug Promacta (eltrombopag) by the US Food and Drug Administration.
Promacta is now indicated for the treatment of thrombocytopenia in patients with chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura who have had an insufficient response to corticosteroids, immunoglobulins or splenectomy. The agent is also being studied for thrombocytopenia associated with chronic hepatitis C virus, chronic liver disease and oncology-related thrombocytopenia.
