California, USA-based Theravance say that the Food and Drug Administration has cancelled the Anti-Infective Drugs Advisory Committee meeting scheduled for February 27, to discuss telavancin, proposed for the treatment of complicated skin and skin structure infections (cSSSIs) caused by Gram-positive bacteria, including resistant pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
Although there was no initial explanation available for the cancellation, there was speculation that Theravance had filed additional data with the FDA in support of the drug. As a result, the news saw the firm's share price rise 5.7% to $18 in early trading.
