France adopts Gardasil as human papillomavirus vaccine

21 January 2008

Girls aged 14 or above in France should be vaccinated with US drug major Merck & Co's Gardasil (human papillomavirus vaccine), according to an announcement by the country's senior health council (HAS). The vaccine is marketed in France by Sanofi Pasteur MSD, a joint venture between the US firm and local drug giant Sanofi-Aventis. Local media reports suggested that the HAS considered Gardasil to be preferable to UK-headquartered GlaxoSmithKline's similar product, Cervarix. The selected vaccine protects against four strains of HPV versus two for GSK's version.

A catch-up program is also recommended for women aged 15 to 23, either before or within the first year of sexual contact. The announcement is in line with several European Union members states (Marketletters passim).
