A generic version of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is under development by Shantha Biotechnics, a Hyderabad, India-based vaccine producer, according to the Economic Times of India. The firm, 60% owned by France-based Merieux Alliance, has previously developed a generic vaccine against hepatitis B (marketed as Shanvac-B).
Shantha's managing director, Varaprasad Reddy, told the Economic Times: "our objective is to provide low-cost vaccines. We are already selling Shanvac-B in developing countries at 23 cents a vial against $70 by MNCs [multinational companies]."
