German health funds achieve surplus

The German Ministry of Health has confirmed that the public-sector  health funds achieved a surplus of 760.0  million euros ($957.0 million)  in 2008.  The money will be used to co-finance the National Health Fund  (GF). Income last year was 161.7 billion euros  against 160.8 billion  euros the year earlier.

Drug spending last year rose by 4.5% and the Ministry stressed that it  was vital for the funds to use the economies possible through the  discounting agreements with the pharmaceutical industry.
