HRA Pharma, a privately-held, French pharmaceutical firm, says that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) has issued a positive opinion recommending marketing authorization for ellaOne (ulipristal acetate), its next-generation emergency contraceptive. If cleared, ellaOne will be the first product to have been specifically designed for use as an emergency contraceptive. According to the Paris-based company, the drug presents improved clinical characteristics over existing hormonal treatments, such as a good safety and tolerability profile and the advantage of sustained efficacy up to five days following unprotected intercourse or contraception failure.
