IFFIm vaccine bonds to launch

10 March 2008

The International Finance Facility for Immunization (IFFIm) is to launch its bonds to Japanese investors, following a successful debut in the UK which raised $1.0 billion in November 2006. The scheme involves raising cash for immediate use for immunization projects against future income from government aid subsidies.

Alan Gillespie, the IFFIm's chairman, said: "there is no value immunizing a child in 2015, when funds might become available, if that child is going to die of disease this year."

The funds will be raised via Daiwa Securities Group and used to support the work of the GAVI Alliance, the World Health Organizaton, national governments, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and vaccine makers.
