Israel Ends Prescribing Ban On Viagra

14 June 1998

Israel's Health Ministry is ending its ban on prescribing Pfizer'simpotence drug Viagra (sildenafil), which was imposed pending US Food and Drug Administration and Pfizer go-aheads for continued use and details of contraindications after the deaths of six men who took the drug (Marketletter June 1).

The Ministry is again permitting doctors to prescribe the drug, available in Israel only by personal import, according to Joshua Shemer, the Health Ministry's associate director general for medical technology and infrastructure, reported by Reuters. This means a patient with a prescription for Viagra must receive approval from the Ministry's district pharmacist.

The drug has not yet been approved in Israel, said Mr Shemer, noting that Pfizer had not yet filed a formal request to sell Viagra there. Once Pfizer or its local importer files such a request, the Israeli Ministry will evaluate the drug, although Mr Shemer noted that the Ministry relies strongly on the FDA's opinion.
