Japan sees growth in nicotine patch market

Nicotine patch sales are growing sharply in Japan after the health authorities relaxed regulations to allow smokers to buy such products over the counter in spring .

In May, Novartis Pharma KK, a unit of Swiss drug giant, started selling Nicotinell patches in Japan. Other companies followed suit last summer. Takeda Pharmaceutical launched Johnson & Johnson's Nicorette Patch, while Taisho Pharmaceutical released Ciganon CQ, co-developed with GlaxoSmithKline of the UK.

Skin patches help users to quit smoking by supplying nicotine to the body and reducing withdrawal symptoms such as irritation and concentration difficulties.
