Merck Serono launches Kuvan in Europe

22 April 2009

Merck Serono, a division of Germany's Merck KGaA, has launched Kuvan (sapropterin dihydrochloride) in Europe. The drug is indicated for  hyperphenylalaninemia due to phenylketonuria or tetrahydrobiopte-rin  deficiency, and is the only treatment available in Europe for HPA due to  these two rare genetic diseases leading to an abnormally high  concentration of phenylalanine in the blood. Beginning with France,  Germany and the UK, Kuvan will be rolled out in a total of 13 European  countries this year. "In the USA, where Kuvan has been available since  2007, we have received positive testimonials from health care  professionals and from the patients whose quality of life has improved  thanks to treatment with Kuvan," said Roberto Gradnik, executive vice  president commercial Europe at Merck Serono.
