MMR VACCINE SUSPENDED IN JAPAN

23 May 1993

Following the withdrawal of the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccines in the UK and Canada (Marketletters passim), the Japanese Health and Welfare Ministry has announced that all MMR vaccines currently on sale in Japan are to be withdrawn.

According to the Ministry, there seems to have been some variation in the incidence of associated axenic meningitis with the three vaccines withdrawn. However, the overall incidence was about one in 900. The ratio was derived from figures collected from 1988. A total of 1,667,103 vaccinations were recorded, with 1,683 of these children developing meningitis. The three companies that produce the vaccines are Kitasato Kenkyujo, Takeda and Handai Biseibutsubyo Kenkyukai.
