Farmitalia Carlo Erba of Italy has been expanding its plant at Ascoli Piceno in the south of the country. The plant accounts for 30% of Farmitalia sales, which were 1,389 billion lire ($906.1 million) in 1991. The plant was established in 1972 with the help of regional financial aid.
A new unit covering 4,000 m2 has now been added to the 1972 unit of 16,000m2. The plant makes extensive use of automation technology in drug production but the workforce has actually increased from 130 to 300. Ascoli has now become Farmitalia's second major center for non-parenteral forms of drug output alongside the plant at Nerviano. Sales from Ascoli have expanded steadily and some 10 billion lire of new investment will be put in by the company over the next two years.
Output has been increased from 25 to 60 million units annually, and production capacity is now over 80 million units.
