New supplement made from Mucadine grape skins can help inhibit growth of certain cancers

21 October 2007

An antioxidant made from the locally, USA-grown muscadine grape contains the highest available natural concentrations of a compound that has been proven to inhibit the growth of many types of cancer cells.

Vinetra is an all-natural dietary supplement made by Lewisville, North Carolina-based Muscadine Naturals. Made from these native grapes grown in North Carolina, Vinetra is the only all-natural supplement known to feature piceatannol, which has been heralded by some as a "miracle compound," the firm says.

A recent study from the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Health has shown that the antioxidant resveratrol inhibits the growth of a number of cancer cell types including prostate cancer cells. This is independent of, and in addition to, the effects of piceatannol, which was also shown to inhibit prostate cancer cell growth in other recently-released studies, the firm notes. The most interesting fact to come from the study was that the piceatannol is the more active and more readily absorbable compound of the two and both are present and maximally preserved in the muscadine grape skin powder which is used to make Vinetra.
