Next US HHS Sec must defend virus sample sharing
The US Secretary of Health and Human Services has called for his successor to "strongly defend" the principle that virus samples are freely exchanged across international borders for public health reasons. Michael Leavitt, who was appointed by President George W Bush in 2005, will stand down after the presidential election on November 4, to be replaced by a person nominated by the next White House incumbent.
Mr Leavitt was speaking in Washington DC where he defended the tough line of refusing to accept demands from Indonesia for shared intellectual property rights and commercialization deals for any vaccines that might be developed from H5N1 strain avian influenza samples. He argued that the principle of free exchange, dating from post-1945 agreements, must continue
