Nigeria's federal government has authorized a 7.2-billion naira ($54.9 million) campaign against HIV/AIDS. Abdulsalim Nasidi, the Director of Special Projects at the Ministry of Health, announced the extra funding at a conference of the West African College of Physicians in Abuja, Nigeria.
In addition to the federal grant, Dr Nasidi confirmed increased funding for the College and stated that a new immunization strategy for Nigeria will be launched soon, according to the allAfrica.com news service.
One major concern in the West African country is in the area of polio vaccination. Bad publicity surrounding a number of people who developed polio as a result of the immunization process, and conspiracy theories about foreign drugmakers or the US government, have resulted in Nigeria being one of five countries still classified by the World Health Organization where the disease is endemic (Marketletters passim).
