The Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland, USA, has received a $43.0 million award from the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief to improve HIV/AIDS services in Nigeria, the Associated Press reports. The PEPFAR program was launched by US President George W Bush in 2003 .
The IHV's founder and director, Robert Gallo, said: "this new award enables us to reach even more people who need the care and treatment provided by our institute's experts." The funds will be distributed via the AIDS Care and Treatment in Nigeria program (ACTION) and could provide 48,000 people with drugs and a further 100,000 with HIV testing and counselling, the AP said.
One course favored by the PEPFAR is providing a short course of drugs to pregnant women, which the program's administrators claim has prevented about 100,000 newborns worldwide from contracting the disease (Marketletter June 4).
