Indian drug major Ranbaxy Laboratories has hired Rudolph Giuliani, the former Mayor of New York City, USA, as an advisor. The announcement came shortly after the US Food and Drug Administration blocked 30 generic products made by the Indian firm, due to alleged manufacturing problems (Marketletter September 22).
Mr Giuliani, who was most recently an unsuccessful Republican candidate for the US presidential election this year, first came to prominence as the District Attorney for South New York, focusing on organized crime, before serving two terms as the city's Mayor. According to a press statement from Ranbaxy, he will advise on compliance issues.
