Pfizer economic study says Sutent cost effective in mRCC

21 September 2008

Results from an international study presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology, in Stockholm, Sweden, predict that Pfizer's Sutent (sunitinib) is cost effective as a first-line therapy for patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma.

The world pharmaceutical giant's economic model, which was analyzed in the context of three health care systems - Sweden, Spain and the USA - predicts better outcomes with sunitinib, in terms of life years, progression-free life years and quality-adjusted life years, compared with Roche's Avastin (bevacizumab) plus interferon-alpha, Bayer's Nexavar (sorafenib) and Wyeth's Torisel (temsirolimus). In addition, sunitinib was found to be cost saving when compared with bevacizumab and IFN-alpha and temsirolimus.
