US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and German biopharmaceutical firm Scil Technology have signed a worldwide licensing deal to develop and commercialize the latter's candidate cartilage-specific growth factor, rhCD-RAP. The drug, a recombinant version of a naturally-occurring polypeptide involved in cartilage production, has been shown to stimulate cartilage synthesis in vitro in chondrocytes derived from patients suffering osteoarthritis.
The deal, which provides Pfizer with exclusive, worldwide rights to develop CD-RAP, entitles Martinsried-headquartered Scil to an upfront fee and milestone payments that could total $250.0 million. The agreement also stipulates that Scil receives royalties based on sales if the product is successfully brought to market.
