The European Commission has granted Orphan Medicinal Product designation to sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in Pfizer's blockbuster erectile dysfunction therapy Viagra, for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. The US drug major is currently conducting Phase III studies of sildenafil for these indications, with results expected by mid-year.
