Pfizer launched its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra (sildenafilcitrate) in Japan on March 23, targeting an estimated 6-7 million patient market. A 25mg tablet will cost 1,100 yen ($9.32) while a 50mg tablet will be 1,300 yen, which is roughly in line with the pricing in other countries where the drug is available.
Viagra will not be covered by health insurance in Japan, and patients will also have to foot the bill for diagnostic tests given before prescription, including blood and urine tests and an electrocardiogram, which will cost around 10,000 yen or more, reports Reuters.
