US drug giant Pfizer has announced plans to close its manufacturing plant at Sandwich in the UK. The move, which will result in the loss of 420 jobs, forms part of the ongoing restructuring plan, designed to save between $1.5 billion to $2.0 billion by the end of 2008, that Pfizer announced earlier this year (Marketletter January 29). At the time, the firm said that it had taken the decision to help it adjust to increasing generic competition for key products.
