Bayer HealthCare, part of Germany's Bayer Group, has announced plans to present data from a Phase III trial of its drug Xarelto (rivaroxaban) at this year's meeting of the American Society of Hematology in Atlanta, Georgia, in December. The product, which is being co-developed with US health care major Johnson & Johnson, is intended to prevent venous thromboembolism in patients who have undergone major orthopedic surgery.
Data to be presented is from the RECORD (REgulation of Coagulation in major Orthopedic surgery reducing the Risk of DVT and PE) program, in which Xarelto was compared with a range of currently-available treatments. These include: RECORD-1, which assessed the drug in comparison with subcutaneous enoxaparin as an extended prophylactic therapy for patients who had undergone total hip angioplasty; RECORD-2, which repeated the previous trial using a short-term regimen; and RECORD-3, which compared Xarelto with a direct Factor Xa inhibitor in subjects who had received a total knee angioplasty.
