AstraZeneca advances oral GLP-1 elecoglipron into Phase III

Anglo-Swedish pharma major AstraZeneca (LSE: AZN) is moving its oral GLP-1 receptor agonist elecoglipron into an extensive Phase III program after positive Phase IIb results in obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Elecoglipron, a once-daily oral small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist licensed from Chinese biotech company Eccogene in 2023, was tested in the VISTA obesity trial and the SOLSTICE type 2 diabetes study. The data were presented at the American Diabetes Association’s 2026 Scientific Sessions and published in The Lancet.
