NHS England backs Procysbi for ultra-rare nephropathic cystinosis

NHS England has recommended Procysbi (mercaptamine bitartrate [cysteamine] gastro-resistant hard capsules), also referred to as "delayed-release mercaptamine bitartrate", for routine commissioning for eligible patients aged one year and above with nephropathic cystinosis, family-controlled Italian drugmaker Chiesi revealed today.

The decision means eligible patients who meet the clinical criteria can access an additional cystine-depleting therapy option through NHS England specialised services. The treatment can be taken twice daily, compared with four-times-daily dosing for the currently commissioned immediate-release formulation.
