Danish drugmaker Novo (NOV: N) has added three early-stage obesity programs to its pipeline through an asset purchase agreement with Kallyope, a privately held New York biotech company. The deal was disclosed on Friday in a LinkedIn post by Jacob Petersen, Novo's head of global research, and covers non-incretin approaches to weight loss rather than the gut hormones behind today's leading treatments.
The programs sit outside the incretin class of gut hormones that includes GLP-1 medicines such as Novo's obesity blockbuster Wegovy (semaglutide). By reaching for different biological mechanisms, Novo is hedging against the nausea and weight regain that can follow incretin treatment, and widening the range of options it might offer patients with different needs.
