Trump directs stockpile of APIs to bolster US supply resilience
US President Donald Trump issued an executive order on August 13 2025 instructing the Department of Health and Human Services to assemble a six-month stockpile of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for around 26 critical drugs.
The move revives a domestic reserve scheme - known as the Strategic Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients Reserve, or SAPIR - and charges officials with designating a list of about 26 medicines key to "national health and security" and readying a repository for safe-keeping of APIs as soon as certification allows.
