White House aide nominated for FDA commissioner role

US President Donald Trump has nominated Heidi Overton, deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, as the next commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), announcing the choice in a social media post on Wednesday.

Dr Overton is a physician who has worked on several of the administration's second-term health initiatives, including drug pricing agreements with manufacturers and an effort to accelerate development of psychedelic treatments. She trained in general surgery at Johns Hopkins and was a White House fellow during President Trump's first term.
