Vertanical’s cannabis therapy shows Phase III success in chronic back pain
German biotech Vertanical has reported strong Phase III results for its cannabis-derived therapy VER-01 in chronic low back pain, adding to momentum behind regulatory reviews already under way in Europe. The company has also signaled plans to launch a pivotal US study in early 2026.
In a placebo-controlled trial, VER-01 reduced pain intensity more effectively than placebo, with benefits sustained over 12 months. Patients also reported better sleep and physical function. A second study compared VER-01 directly with opioids and found the cannabis extract not only outperformed opioids in easing pain but also proved superior in gastrointestinal tolerability.
