AstraZeneca to increase spend at Virginia manufacturing facility to $4.5 billion

10 October 2025

UK pharma major AstraZeneca (LSE: AZN) announced that it will now invest $4.5 billion in its new manufacturing facility in Virginia, a proposed increase of $500 million to support the enhanced manufacturing capability of a broader range of medicines including cancer treatments.

This is part of the historic $50 billion investment announced in July 2025. The new facility will be located at Rivanna Futures in Albemarle County and is expected to create approximately 3,600 direct and indirect jobs, powering economic growth and Virgina’s leadership at the forefront of life sciences innovation.

AstraZeneca adds to a slew of drugmakers that have pledged multi-billion-dollar US commitments this year, under threat of hefty pharmaceutical tariffs from President Donald Trump. Several companies began to trickle out specific production plans after Trump last month promised a 100% tariff on all branded or patented products, unless their developer was building a manufacturing facility in the US.
